Marie in Wonderland
Marie Chapuis once followed Lewis Caroll on a trip through a rabbit hole to study the realms of the unexpected. While Caroll got stuck in literature, Marie managed to escape and provided us with beautiful animated illustrations ever since. Her drawings are feminine, fascinating and full of surprises. Watch out for insects, birds and beasts!
Where do you come from?
I come from a town surrounded by moutains, near the Italian border in France.
When did you discover you wanted to be a professional creative?
Ever since I was a child, I would spend hours drawing, sketching, painting - at home, in maths classes, everywhere. I guess the will to become a creative was always an evidence deep inside of me. My professional background includes both fashion and advertising.
What is the reason behind illustration’s renaissance?
I came to think that maybe, many things have already been done with movies and photography - illustration can offer many other possibilities, both through the treatment and the concept. The world of illustration opens wide the doors to the wildest imagination.
How would you define beauty?
Beauty always shows a poetic side, something that is more than just figures.
What is the poetry of animation?
Poetry, by the way, seems easier and more complete to show through animation. That's the way I work my illustrated Gifs : the movement is the key to the idea. I inspire myself with stories I'm told, and I often involve mythic objects from my childhood. The most important part for me, is to reach something inside people when they look at my work : and I always tend to make it "pleasant to look at" :)
